1/26/2024 0 Comments Scott schwartz mowingElliott Arkin, ‘The Spanish Gardener’, Brooklyn, NY, Photo by Howard Schwartz This sculpture has a name: ‘The Spanish Gardener.’ Picasso will be mowing the lawn at this location until July 15, 2018. The unassuming street corner is Degraw Street and Columbia Street in the Columbia Waterfront District. I was not viewing this work of art in a gallery or museum I was viewing it on an unassuming street corner in Brooklyn. My first emotion upon seeing it was a surprise. It turns out that upon closer inspection, one could see that this was not the real Pablo Picasso, but rather a sculpture that was artfully made by Elliott Arkin. The rectangular patch of grass was small enough that two steps in any direction would have been enough to cover most of the area. He was wearing a black and white horizontally striped shirt and he was wearing shorts. The grass was short enough the way it was, but at least Picasso was dressed appropriately for the occasion. It was a sickly green color with uneven patches of yellow. The rectangular patch of grass was not even worth mowing. Every minute Picasso spent mowing his lawn was one minute he wasn’t able to spend with a paintbrush in one hand and a palette in the other, working on his latest painting. He was inside a fence, which was unusual, and the expression on his face, with both eyes bulging and a look of disgust on his thin lips, made me think that he felt he was wasting his time. Firm the soil down around the plant by hand, tamping with the flat side of a small trowel, or even by pressing down on the soil by foot. Push the soil gently around the roots filling in empty space around the root ball. This is especially important if the roots are dense and have filled up the container. Grasping the plant at the top of the root ball, use your finger to lightly rake apart the lower roots apart. Rotate the container and continue to tap, loosening the soil until the plant pulls smoothly from the pot.ĭig the hole up to two times larger than the root ball and deep enough that the plant will be at the same level in the ground as the soil level in the container. To remove the plant from the container, gently brace the base of the plant, tip it sideways and tap the outside of the pot to loosen. Position plants so that taller plants are in the center or background of the landscape design and shorter plants in the foreground. I purchased my plant at a local nursery, from an end of season clearance pile, but there is at least one seller on Amazon offering live elfin thyme plants for sale. My favorite varieties are the ones that have the bright pink flowers with little purple stripes like those in this photo I found by Andy. Thyme is one of those plants that tends to cross-polinate easily so just be forewarned, not everything being sold as creeping or elfin thyme is the same exact plant.įor the most part the size is the same but the color of the flowers might vary a bit from pale lavender to hot pink. I don’t think I would recommend it for a terrarium as terrariums should not be kept in direct sunlight and my elfin thyme is clearly showing its preference for lots of light. It has been sitting on the kitchen table for several days and I already see signs of it getting straggly and reaching for the sun. I planned on using it in a small fairy garden and adding a bit to a terrarium I am building. I purchased a small pot of elfin thyme last week. Don’t you just love the hairy aspect of it? Whether you plan on making a fairy garden or a terrarium, this is definitely a plant you should consider.Īs you can see from my photo, the leaves are itty bitty and hairy. Originally sold as a ‘walkable’, creeping groundcover, this tiny-leaved blooming herb is very popular with people creating their own tiny green gardens. Elfin thyme is one of the hottest plants available right now. FONEPAW ANDROID DATA RECOVERY 1.8 REGISTRATION CODE FULL VERSION Recover deleted files from android s sd card. Miner’s gentleman stands out for the combination of discretion, decorum, and nonchalance that the Renaissance called sprezzatura. And he values learning in pursuit of the truth. He treats the opposite sex with passionate respect. Three masculine archetypes emerge here-the warrior, the lover, and the monk-forming the character of “the compleat gentleman.” He cultivates a martial spirit in defense of the true and the beautiful. In this tour de force of popular history and gentlemanly persuasion, Miner lays out the thousand-year history of this forgotten ideal and makes a compelling case for its modern revival. Brad Miner invites you to discover the oldest and best model of manhood- the gentleman. Is a man’s only choice between the brutish, rutting #MeToo lout and the gelded imitation woman, endlessly sensitive and fun to go shopping with? Even if I’m winning, I’m not enjoying myself because I don’t get the satisfaction of making each city perfect Uh, ignoring the fact that I’m not particularly good at this game and I’m probably making a dozen mistakes I don’t know about in these “perfect” cities. It all starts to feel sort of random and haphazard after a while. I’ve got two dozen of these decisions to make every turn, and I can’t linger over all of them.” I’ll just do the next most obvious thing and move on. I don’t even remember when I got this one. “What was my plan for this city? Did I have one? I don’t remember. The game will move my camera to a worker that needs new orders and I’ll stare at the city, trying to remember what I was trying to accomplish the last time I was here. They all kinda blur together in my mind and I start worrying less about optimizing my cities and more about optimizing the use of my real-world time. I can’t keep track of that many projects and plans at the same time. However, this all falls apart when I find myself with a dozen cities. My plans are usually fairly complicated and they vary quite a bit depending on the terrain and the position of my enemies. Oh! But before I do that, I should put a mine on this hill so the city will have better production and let me finish my military unit that much sooner!” I’ve already got another source of that resource in another city. I can make up for the lost food by developing this square of (some strategic resource) into a farm. If I drop a fort here and place a unit in it, then I can keep my pesky rivals out of this peninsula entirely. This tile might be a fantastic place to grow food, but it also makes a perfect choke point. I’ll obsess over tile improvements and look for ways to optimize land usage to make my cities flourish. I enjoy having lots of workers buzzing around my cities, improving tiles and laying down roads. I obsess over making sure my cities are placed far apart so they have lots of breathing room and don’t crowd each other in the late game. In fact, I think that’s the central appeal of the series for me. The AI would probably cram about 15 cities into this same space.Īs many people already guessed in the comments, I am a huge fan of the tall playstyle. I've got just 6 cities in my half of the continent. 1/26/2024 0 Comments Iterm open tab in same directory(go to beginning of current line) but that doesn't work in the shell. For example ⌘ + Left Arrow is usually the same as Home Keys and Mac equivalents don't always work. It works in many contexts.Ī lot of shell shortcuts work in iterm and it's good to learn these because arrow keys, home/end Instead of typing exit, just get this in muscle memory. In general, use this instead of typing clear over and over. If you use ⌘ + K, this is telling iTerm to clear the screen which might have the same result or do something terrible (like when using a TUI like top or htop. This is telling the shell to do it instead of an explicit command like clear or cls in DOS. Especially when your last command was wrong by a single typo or something. Ctrl as modifier might also work on mac and non-mac keyboards/shells/apps. This takes you off the home row but it's easy to rememberįast way to jump by words to correct a typo or "run again" with minor changes to last command. Use this to start over typing without hitting Ctrl-C Hopefully some of these improve your work life. There is also more than one way to do a thing so adopt what you like best. There are many shortcuts out there but I use these quite a bit. These will usually work in Bash/Zsh/Fish on Mac and on Linux. These are just common shell shortcuts unrelated to iTerm itelf. That’s partly because of improvements in the way the procedure is done these days, but also because of the general empowerment of women, he believes. My GP, however, assured me that men getting a vasectomy is not only cheaper and safer (because it’s a less-invasive procedure than tubal ligation) it’s also more common. One of my mates, who had kids decades before me, laughed his head off at the idea of being “neutered” as he put it, and his wife dutifully had the operation instead. My wrong-headed impression, growing up, was that most married couples turned to tubal ligation at this point - the woman got her tubes tied, and vasectomy was mainly a punchline for jokes. Obviously, having the vasectomy was the logical thing to do, but the only way I could talk myself into it was by making it a work project, a story to write, so I started doing the research. In actual fact, I was far too frightened to go through with it, and even a lifelong hatred of condoms and a withering fear of an accidental pregnancy (we have two children, they are perfect, we don’t want any more and I’m too bloody old anyway) wasn’t doing anything to change it. So when she decided, not unreasonably, that her body had had enough of being on the pill and that she should stop taking it, I was, theoretically at least, ready to “take one for the team”, as my cheery vasectomist put it.Īs I say, theoretically. It involved a mewling baby, a sleepless whirl of panic and pain, and a husband complaining about being tired. And her recovery did not involve sitting on the couch weeping onto a remote control and nursing frozen peas. My wife, for example, did, after all, give birth without the blissful IV sedation that we can, and indeed must, choose for the snip. Which is why no man who’s had a vasectomy should look for too much sympathy from their partner. Well, there are two answers to that, and I’ll give you the most important one first, because you need to be prepared to hear it coming at you: it’s not as bad as childbirth. Why? How? And why now? These are all very good questions, but I know what those of you who are considering it, or know they might one day, really want to know - how bad was the pain? Hold him down so the doctor could get more anaesthetic into him was awful enough, but it was the double-punch of pain he felt - “like I’d been kicked in the balls really hard by someone, who then slashed me down there with a knife at the same time - it was both a dull pain and a stabbing one all at once” - that stuck with me.Īnd yet somehow, despite all that, I’ve now had the dreaded snip, after years of putting it off. His description of kicking trays of instruments across the room while the nurse tried to In the most unwise example of tightness ever, he’d decided to save some money by having a local anaesthetic and staying awake for the whole thing, which was only mildly disturbing, until the drugs, unfortunately, stopped working. My personal procrastination was particularly powered by the chilling testimony of a former work colleague, Mick, who crabbed into our office in evident pain a few days after his procedure and proceeded to relate his tale of horror. Nor, it turns out, will there ever be anything good about the day after a vasectomy, when you wake up with what looks like an accident at a liquorice factory in your pants and a gut pain that feels like the mafia put a whole horse in your bed overnight and made it kick you in the balls. And there’s nothing we’re more likely to put off than having a vasectomy, because it’s just never, ever a good day to have someone attack your scrotum with sharp implements. Yes, some men are go-getters, day-seizers and goal setters, but most of the ones I call friends are, like me, exceedingly proficient procrastinators. He shared his recent snip-by-snip experience.
